person dead.ntracie strahan is in newark with what we know so far. tracie? >> reporter: michael, a lot of details coming in at this hour. you can see the flashing lights over my shoulder. this is an active crime scene. we're working to confirm reports that the victim who died here was a rutgers newark student. another student was shot as well. at this hour the search co inues for two men that may have been affiliated with this. we'll show you video of the crime scene. ask the detectives were here and the newark police department is assisting in this as well. all of this went down before 10:00 last night inside of 28th central avenue. that's where the victim was found. anotoer person shot was on the sidewalk. that's where theryerson was found and discovered and taken to a local hospital. right now, again, police are looking for two assailants who fled the scene in this area. not much of a description on them. believed to be between 20 and 25

will lated levels at four school buildings.d the faa is investigating a small plane crash. the piper 28 had -- tht clipped a tree and power line before crashing at second street and third avenue in bay port. the pilot, scott clifford, was seriously injured. he has two broken legs and head injuries. his passenger, a 66-year-old had a minor head injury. >> i was looking out my window and it stalled. he turned around to come back in and he went down. he landed and wd t on fire and stuff. >> investigators say the plane was headed to orange county. that's where both the pilot and his passenger live. this latest crash is the third is as many months on long island. in february, a plane crashed in setauket harbor. a flight in whstructor, student pilot and two passengers wtoe on board. one of the passengers, a college

morning. he then allegedly ordered a woman at the scene to his car and drove off with her. she was found later unharmed.whbut gomez is charged with first degree murder. the latesy battleground over transgender rights is in new jersey. the pascack regional school district plans to vote on a new policy allowing all students to use restrooms and locker rooms based on the gender with which they identify. a conservative group is asking to sue if the policy adopted. there are similar policies in place in other placed across the state. the five presidential hopefuls are i new york today. they want your vote. "today in new york" starts now. good morning everyone. monday morning. it's april 11th. i'm darlene rodriguez. i'm michael gargiulo. chris is off. but storm team 4's raphael miranda is in with good news. >> eventually. it's finally starting to feel more like april out there. that is the good news. we're tracking some rain, light rain on storm tracker. it's not a clear picture by any means. light showers in the hudson valley. well. as we head towards new jersey, most of the rain is very light this morning. if you want to stay completely dry, you need the umbrella handy today. on this monday, temperatures will return back to the 50s this afternoon. much milder than what we saw over the weekend. the sporadic shower chance stays with us through the afternoon. it will be breezy with a high of 58 degrees.

was discovered dead inside of the building behind me in a second-floor apartment. another person was shot here as well. right now, authorities are on the hunt for two men they believe to be behind this attack. let show you video of what it looked like when we arrived. all of this happening just before 10:00 last night. news 4 is working to confirm reports that the victim who was shot and killed here was a student at rutgers university's newark campus. as you said, it's really just down the street. as for the two men that authorities are looking for, they're said to be between 20 and 25 years old. both of them fleeing this area southbound on hallsly street. one of them possibly without a shirt on. another person was also shot. that person is being treated at a local hospital for his injuries. back to you. >> thanks so much, tracie. happening today, we could learn if an off-duty new jersey

happening today, new jersey representative donald cain, jr., plans to urge congress to pass test the lead act during a news conference in newark. that would require states that receive certain federal funding to help schools test the lead. the testing recently done in newark showed elevated lead levels in four school buildings. tonight the pascack valley regional high school will vote on a new policy. it will allow them to use the locker rooms with which they identify. a national conservative group threatened to sue if the policy is adopted. supporters say there are similar policies in place the other districts across the state. now to the race for the white house. the democratic hopefuls are stumping in our state today during a long string of events aimed to win your vote. katherine creag is in port washington in long island. kat, we know this event doesn't

two people behind this. we'll show you video of what it looked like when we arrived. the essex county prosecutor's office was on the scene along with several newark police officers. this was a double shooting that happened before 10:00 last night. that private residence. an apartment building here on central avenue. we're told that theavictim was shot and killed was found inside of that apartment. a second person is being treated as at a local hospital for a gunshot wound as well. in terms of a description of who police are looking for, two men between the ages of 20 and 25 years old last scene fleeing this area headed southbound. they were running away from this area. again, dar leap, we're wweorking to confirm reports that he's a rutgers astudent. a lot of people say this is an area popular with the college students here. we're working to confirm reports that a student was involved in this. back to you. >> tracie strahan, thank you. on long island, investigators say two men a

at this hour, they're hunting for the two people behind this. we'll show you what the investigation looked like when we arrived. crime scene detectives scoured this area and questioning people about the shooting that happened before 10:00 last night. this happened at 28 central avenue. two people involved in the shooting. one is recovering at a local hospital from his gun shot wound. again, we're hearing that the person killed here was a student at the rutgers-newark campus. authorities are looking for two assailants who fled the scene. both between 20 and 25 years old and fled in an unknown direction. the essex county prosecutor's office, they left the scene about an hour ago. police are still patrolling this area as they continue the investigation. back to you. >> tracie, thank you. on long island, the faa is

police confirm that the remains were found in long pond, ironworks state park in milford. friends say the 21-year-old drowned about a month ago. he went for a swim with them and never resurfaced. funeral services are planned tomorrow in jersen city. some lawmakers on long island want immediate action to stop what they're calling now a crisis level of heroin overdose deaths. yesterday they called in governor cuomo to help create inpatient services at two underutilized facilities. those are the pilgrim psychiatric center in brentwood and the sag more children's psychiatric center in melville. this is after suffolk county was ranked first in the state for deaths related to heroin. >> we need to open up those beds as quickly as possible. >> the lawmakers insist outpatient services are swamped and that they're not as effective as being an inpatient, being hospitalized. more than 300 people died n suffolk county from overdoses
